Mental Health Consumers and Carers Mentoring and Training Program
The Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA) has been provided with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health & Ageing (DOHA) to provide an opportunity for mental health consumers and carers to participate in a mentoring and training program.

MHCA is seeking suitably able and enthusiastic people who identify as either mental health consumers or carers to apply for the following 10-month programs: the Consumer & Carer Mentoring For The Future program; and the National Register of Consumer & Carer Representatives program.   For more information contact Linda Rosie or Melanie Cantwell at the Mental Health Council of Australia on (02) 6285 3100 or visit the website at www.mhca.org.au.  Deadline for applications is 11 July, 2007 by 9:00 am.

Tax Concession Charity Endorsement
The Australian Taxation Office is currently in the process of contacting all tax concession charities which includes self help and support groups to remind them to tell the ATO if they are no longer entitled to endorsement. If you are a group and are not registered as a charity or you believe your service has changed and you no longer qualify then please contact the ATO direct. Working Carers Study
A Family Leadership and Initiatives Grant Project

This study is funded by Carers WA and the Disability Services Commission and will explore the role of working carers of children/people with disability, chronic or mental illness. We are seeking participants who care for children/people with a disability, mental or chronic illness and who simultaneously participate in the paid workforce. The study will mainly involve small group discussions. Adult Learners' Week Funding (September 1-8, 2007)
Under this program, community groups can apply for grants between $100 and $500 for events such as literacy workshops, music appreciation and indigenous art activities.  Grants between $1000 and $2500 are available for community events involving two or more organisations working in collaboration.  To apply go to http://www.vetinfonet.det.wa.edu.au/home/ and click on the Adult Learners' Week information and application link at the bottom of the page.

Active Ageing at the Local Level Initiative Funding for 2007-2008
Funding is available for activities which encourage the participation of ageing and older ageing people in community life and engage them in consultation and in the planning and implementation of policies and programs at the local level.  Applications for this third round of funding are now invited and must be received by the Department of Local Government and Regional Development by 5pm, Friday, August 10, 2007.  A brochure along with applications for the funding program can be accessed via the website at www.dlgrd.wa.gov.au.  Direct any queries to Virginia Scott on 9217 1442 or email virginia.scott@dlgrd.wa.gov.au

Intensive Family Support Grant

Don Chipp Foundation Small Grants
The Don Chip Foundation fosters and sponsors research on issues related to the promotion of social and economic justice within the Australian Community.  Expressions of interest are sought for small grants of up to $5000 to investigate a range of contemporary issues.  Applications can only be received from organisations that are incorporated and have an ABN. Dyslexia
This group is for people with Dyslexia, which is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read.

Carers of People with Mental Health Issues
This group is for people who care for others with mental health issues.

Fly In/Fly Out Group
This group is  for families who have a parent or partner who works Fly In/Fly Out.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for Youth and Parents
This group would be for young people who have the disorder and also for their parents. People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have persistent, upsetting thoughts (obsessions) and use rituals (compulsions) to control the anxiety these thoughts produce.

Macular Holes
A macular hole is a small hole in the macula which is in the centre of the retina.  People with a macular hole will probably have changes in the central part of their vision.  People may first notice that they have trouble reading small print or that there is distortion when they look at a printed page.

Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial Cystitis is a debilitating inflammatory disease of the bladder wall.  Day and/or night frequency of urination may be the only symptom in early or very mild cases.

August Peace Festival

One of the most important functions of the August Peace Festival event is to provide a platform for not-for-profit organisations involved with marginalised peoples an opportunity to network with the public. The Cancer Council Daffodil Day
24 August

Daffodil Day is the largest national fundraising event for cancer research, education and patient support in the Southern Hemisphere. The Daffodil is the international symbol of hope for all touched by cancer. Cancer Council CALD Information Booklets
The Cancer Council has information booklets to help CALD communities deal with the emotional impact of cancer, and culturally appropriate prevention guides on healthy eating and physical activity to help lower their cancer risk. Call 13 11 20 to ask for a free copy or to speak with someone confidentially in Greek, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese or Mandarin.

New Resource: Families and Friends of People Affected By Mental Illness
SANE Australia has published a new pamphlet containing key information and tips for family and friends of people affected by mental Illness - to help themselves as well as the person with the diagnosis. To request a free copy, call 1 800 18 SANE. Packs of 100 are also availalbe from the bookstore at www.sane.org
